90% Lead | 5% Antimony | 5% Tin | Approx. 15–16 BHN
Rock Shot Products Lyman #2 Bullet Alloy features the classic 90% lead, 5% antimony, and 5% tin composition, providing a versatile balance of hardness, strength, and castability for bullet casters.
With an estimated hardness of approximately 15–16 BHN, Lyman #2 is considerably harder than pure lead while maintaining useful casting characteristics. Its relatively high tin content also makes it a popular general-purpose alloy for producing well-defined castings and for custom alloy blending.
Our Lyman #2 Bullet Alloy is supplied in convenient approximately 2 lb ingots, making it easy to handle, portion, melt, and incorporate into your casting operation.
Sold as individual approximately 2 lb ingots with a minimum purchase of 5 ingots (approximately 10 lb total).
Lead (Pb): 90%
Antimony (Sb): 5%
Tin (Sn): 5%
Estimated Hardness: Approximately 15–16 BHN*
Approximate Weight Per Ingot: 2 lb ± 0.25 lb
Minimum Purchase: 5 ingots (approximately 10 lb total)
Approximate Size Per Ingot: 2.5" × 2.5" × 1"
Form: Cast Ingot
Primary Use: Bullet casting and custom alloy blending
Individual ingot weights and dimensions may vary slightly due to the casting process.
Lyman #2 has long been recognized as a useful bullet-casting alloy because its combination of lead, antimony, and tin provides a practical balance of hardness and casting characteristics.
The 5% antimony increases hardness compared with softer lead alloys, while the 5% tin contributes to the alloy's casting characteristics and mold fill-out.
Common uses include:
• General bullet casting
• Handgun bullet casting
• Rifle bullet casting where an alloy of this hardness is appropriate
• Custom alloy blending
• Hardening softer lead alloys
• General metal casting and alloy experimentation
Although the minimum purchase is 5 ingots, each individual ingot weighs approximately 2 lb. The smaller ingot format makes Lyman #2 easier to handle, weigh, portion, and melt.
Instead of working with one large block of alloy, casters can use individual ingots as needed and more easily manage the amount of alloy going into each melt.
This product has a minimum purchase of 5 ingots, representing approximately 10 lb of Lyman #2 Bullet Alloy.
The smaller individual ingot size provides convenient handling and portioning while the 5-ingot minimum allows Rock Shot Products to offer this alloy at competitive direct pricing.
Actual hardness and finished casting properties can vary based on alloy composition, cooling rate, casting conditions, heat treatment, and other processing variables.
The approximately 15–16 BHN range is an estimated hardness for this nominal alloy composition and should not be interpreted as a certified hardness measurement for every ingot or finished casting.
